“The Future of the Jews” is a round-table discussion that follows up on the publication of “Strategic Directions for Jewish Life: A Call to Action,” which was published here on eJewishPhilanthropy on October 1, 2015 and generated a great deal of debate, both online and off.

This “Call to Action,” qualifying statements, and differing viewpoints (a few of which are listed below), set the stage for this public conversation.

  • “Three Cheers for the Jewish Vitality Statement and Three Qualifications“
  • “An Argument for Optimism“
  • “Strategic Directions Response“

The discussion will be moderated by David Ellenson, Acting Director of the Schusterman Center for Israel Studies, Visiting Professor in the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, and Chancellor-Emeritus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

The panel will consist of:

  • Sylvia Barack Fishman
Joseph and Esther Foster Professor of Contemporary Jewish Life in the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies; Co-director of the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute
  • Jonathan D. Sarna
Chair, Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program; Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History
  • Jon A. Levisohn
Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Chair in Jewish Educational Thought; Director, Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education
  • Michelle Shain
Ph.D. candidate, The Heller School for Social Policy and Management; Research Associate, Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies?
  • David Manchester
Ph.D. student, The Heller School for Social Policy and Management; Graduate Research Associate, Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies
  • Nathan J. Vaughan

This event is presented by the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program at Brandeis University and cosponsored by the following Brandeis University departments:

  • Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education
  • Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies
