Social Change Does Not Happen Overnight
Tikkun Olam Women’s Foundation of Greater Washington Awards
Record $100,000 in Grants to Nonprofits
The Tikkun Olam Women’s Foundation of Greater Washington (TOWF) marked its sixth grantmaking year with a record $100,000 granted in support of nine organizations to programs effecting social change for women and girls. The Tikkun Olam Women’s Foundation has renewed their support of many of these organizations because of the ground breaking work being done to improve the lives of women and girls.
TOWF’s local grantee organizations include The Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse (JCADA), Jews United for Justice, The Jewish Council for the Aging, Empowered Women International and CASA de Maryland. Grantee organizations in Israel include The Mahut Center for Employment and Guidance for Women, Eretz Acheret: A Different Land, Economic Empowerment for Women and Mavoi Satum. These organizations affect change through employment training for older women, economic empowerment through small business entrepreneurship training, social justice training, human trafficking and domestic worker abuse advocacy and education. “These programs advocate for women’s empowerment, on a personal level and at a grassroots and community organizing level,” explains Kerry Iris, The Foundation’s Co-Chair.
The Tikkun Olam Women’s Foundation is one of the only institutional funders of domestic abuse prevention in the DC area via The Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse (JCADA). JCADA received the Foundation’s first multi- year grant of $30,000 annually. “Social change does not happen overnight. We are proud to take our support of JCADA’s abuse prevention program “It’s Not Love” to the next level,” said Carol Friend Feder, Chair of the Grants Committee.
One renewed grantee, Mavoi Satum, an organization that advocates for the rights of Agunot and Mesoravot Get, women denied religious divorces in Israel, received funding for a grant to help spread the practice of prenuptial agreements in Israel.
The Tikkun Olam Women’s Foundation is the only Jewish giving vehicle in the Greater Washington area that offers women a voice and a vote in supporting causes that impact the lives of women and girls. They achieve this by pooling their charitable donations and then, together, deciding how to allocate funds.
