URJ Camp Newman Breaks Ground on 1st New Building Since Tubbs Fire

Last week URJ Camp Newman broke ground on 6 Points Community Center, opening in January 2021.

This new building will be Camp Newman’s first step to being back home for year-round use. It is estimated to complete construction in December 2020, and be open to the community for limited retreats and events in January 2021.

In October 2017, the camp’s physical location sustained significant damage during the Tubbs Fire in Northern California.

Last summer, all of URJ Camp Newman’s 2019 summer campers returned to the Santa Rosa site for a day-long outdoor excursion. Campers came to this beloved campus on Porter Creek Road to enjoy some all-time camp favorites, including scaling a newly erected Alpine Tower, team building on a new high ropes course, and hiking to the Star, the ultimate Camp Newman rite of passage. The visit allowed all campers to immerse themselves in the great outdoors among the redwoods on the camp’s 500-acre Santa Rosa site.

As in 2018 and 2019, camp will return for Summer 2020 to Cal Maritime in Vallejo, the bay-side, state-of-the-art facility where Camp Newman’s overnight summer camp program continues to flourish.
