Tel Aviv University donors seek to oust Leora Meridor

Many donors have stopped contributing to the university and some governors are considering resignation.

Chairman of the board of governors Robert Goldberg has written to Minister of Education and chairman of the Council for Higher Education Gideon Sa’ar, and chairman of the Planning and Budgeting Committee Prof. Manuel Trachtenberg calling on them to intervene in the “chronic management problems related to the executive council.”

Goldberg published a petition by the board of governors demanding an urgent debate in the executive council to oust Meridor over her management of the university. So far 120 people worldwide have signed the petition, many of them donors who have given millions of dollars to university.

In his letter Goldberg said that many donors have stopped contributing to the university and some members of the board of governors are considering resigning.

from The Jerusalem Post; an opinion piece by Steven Schwager, executive vice president and CEO of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee:

Guess who did not come to the party?

Symbolism, rather than action, dominated the General Assembly (GA) of the Jewish Federations of North America. Its new logo, new name and new executive and lay leader were a sure sign of hope, the harbingers of a sincere and enthusiastic attempt to revive the national organization that succeeds UJC. Yes, the GA was a magnificent celebration of Israeli-American Jewish unity and a demonstration of its might. But I returned from Washington more concerned than I have ever been in my 20 years of Jewish communal service.

… In the excitement to trump new “Jewish peoplehood,” there is the risk that we are abandoning the Jewish people.
