Matthew Bronfman Visits His Roots
More than 120 years later, Matthew Bronfman visits Ataki, Moldova, where his family legacy began.

Matthew Bronfman, currently visiting Moldova for the first Limmud FSU Conference to be held in that country, spent Friday visiting the town of Ataki, the birthplace of his grandfather, Samuel. This is the first time a member of the Bronfman family has visited Ataki since Matthew’s grandfather immigrated to Canada at the end of the 19th century.

During his visit, Bronfman was honored by the Mayor of Ataki, Tragira Vasiliy, with a special welcoming reception where he was also awarded an honorary citizenship.

Matthew Bronfman also met with Baron Arthur Cherar, who is also known as the “The Gypsy King”. Cherar lives in a town called Soroki in Moldova, known as the Gypsy capital of the world.
