Limmud NY in Manhattan Embodied Innovation at Work

Over 750 gathered at Limmud NY over Presidents Weekend. Newly located on the Upper West Side in New York City, the vibrant celebration of Jewish learning and culture attracted a large number of first-timers.

“When the divides among us seem unbridgeable, the Limmud way is to bridge through learning,” said Limmud NY Co-Chair Penny Arons. “This inaugural, non-residential Limmud NY in the heart of the City – was an experiment that proved itself as people of all ages, affiliated and non-engaged alike, flocked to take part. We will continue to explore new ways to design our community throughout the year.”

One measure of the success of Limmud NY’s evolving urban model: Shabbat dinner sold out almost immediately with a long waiting list. And, new volunteers rallied to create the Saturday night, Sunday and Monday programs, which included more than 100 sessions.

Support was provided by Limmud NY anchor partner organizations: Drisha Institute for Jewish Education, Hadar, Hillel International, JTS, Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies, Ramah Camping Movement and Shalom Hartman Institute of North America.

“The diversity Limmud offers and the welcoming, respect-filled atmosphere is unique,” said the Limmud NY Co-Chair Rachel Kanter. “Building on this success, we call on others to join us.
