About the role: eJewishPhilanthropy is looking for a go-getting mid-career editor with a sharp news sense and with the ability to quickly edit clean, precise copy, from shorter hard news stories to larger features, on a variety of topics.

This role will be responsible for authoring, curating and editing the Your Daily Phil newsletter in coordination with eJP and JI colleagues, especially the eJP news editor. This includes writing and producing opinion pieces based on key events and thoughts in the Jewish philanthropy space, native tidbits for the newsletter and constantly engaging with readers and sources for tips and to overall ensure eJP’s coverage is reflecting the conversations and issues our core readers are having and care about.

This will include expanding eJP’s network of freelance writers in conjunction with eJP’s News Editor and Reporter.

Elements of the job:

• Original standalone opinions: This includes gathering the latest insight and information about philanthropists, organizational leaders and social entrepreneurs to ensure each edition of Your Daily Phil has unique insights about the Jewish philanthropic world.
• Newsletter curating and editing: Mixing original and aggregated content into a well-curated daily newsletter. Working alongside the editors, ensuring all eJP news copy is stellar and free of typos and errors — both factual and judgment — before content is published and out our door. This also includes crafting and refining a strong opening section of the newsletter that has ‘voice’ and reveals something buzzy and/or taps into the key convos in the space (e.g. If you were to sit down with a top eJP reader and they ask you in 2 minutes to share what’s happening today).
• Work across platforms: Uploading stories to marketing channels.
• Tracking the philanthropy and Jewish news cycle: Monitoring a variety of news sources.
• Freelance network: Helping grow our network of freelance writers. This includes generating story ideas that might be better suited for freelance writers than our staff.
• Editorial calendar: Helping maintain an editorial calendar to track original stories from staff, freelancers and op-eds. Also includes a story and interview wish list.
• Source engagement: Help organize and maintain a list of key eJP contacts, sources and subscribers and strategize how and who should be in regular communication with various individuals.
• Management: Work closely with eJP editors, reporters, freelancers, and operations staff to ensure that they are on task, motivated, and effectively promoting the mission of eJP through excellent and relevant writing, marketing, and reporting.

Qualifications: Prior journalism experience. A passion for Jewish communal life, preferably with previous experience or knowledge of Jewish institutions and philanthropies. An ability to multitask and manage multiple assignments independently, excellent social skills and strong initiative. Digital literacy and a willingness to learn new techniques and skills.
