In the former Soviet Union, cemeteries are usually poorly maintained. That is especially true for the Jewish sections as so many members of the community perished in the Holocaust or have just left the country. To begin addressing this issue, Hillel Russia recently organized 170 student volunteers and members of their families to clean up parts of the Jewish cemeteries in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ekaterinburg and Khabarovsk.
