I believe key words are an important part of any on line strategy and while I would never suggest it is a "foolproof guarantee" (of course it is not) it is a valuable, results-oriented way to invest your resources IF you are serious about gaining more of your target audience. Optimizing a web site is fast becoming a requirement--just like having an answering service for your phone lines was a couple of decades ago. If nonprofits want to succeed, they are going to have to think about their online services as a core necessity that require a serious investment--just like they do with their telephone lines, their lights and heating...

Not quite so simple Gail. It's not that i don'r agree with your premise, but you make make key word placement sound like it's a fool-proof guarantee. First there's a significant cost in optimizing the site to make sure the key words are implanted in various pages, in the programming language and other crucial areas. Then, there's the constant monitoring of the engines to maintain the site's high-rankings. This all comes at a huge financial drain to the organization. At a time when Jewish non-profits are struggling, this area is one of the first to get the axe.
