I must say that I appreciate Stephen's historical essay. It at least answers some of my questions of what has changed over the years. Having lived in Israel for almost 25 years and watching the initials change has left me scratching my head. As a 45 year old, riding the cusp of the "new generation" I came out of GA 2008 with a very large question of "why?" Why should I give my money through Federation or the UJC to Israel rather than directly to the organiztions who look for the support. I think that when the UJC can give a really clear answer to this, they will find themselves appealling to the "younger" generation.
