Zeek, The Forward and 21st Century Jewish Media

I know it's only a coincidence that on the evening before the announcement of the Rockower Awards for Excellence in Jewish Journalism, a new partnership between The Forward and Zeek: A Journal of Jewish Thought and Culture was publicized. Coincidence because the deal was set a while back and it just so happened last Wednesday was release day. This new partnership will enable Zeek, an award-winning journal that has retained both its independence and its expansive definition of Jewish cultural and spiritual life, to attract a broader audience for its in-depth coverage of Jewish politics, spirituality and culture. Zeek's contributors range from well-known rabbis and professors to emerging artists, musicians and poets. But the real story is the transformation of The Jewish Daily Forward, the … Continue Reading

State of the Jewnion

It’s been a week since the Jewlicious Festival ended. I thought some kind of broad recap would be in order and might even prove to be somewhat instructive to those of you out there who are into that sort of thing, like readers of eJewish Philanthropy or the Fundermentalist. Both of those aforementioned blogs deal with issues related to Jewish philanthropy as well as with organizations and projects they fund. Both have also expressed an interest in issues related to youth, innovation and social entrepreneurship - buzz phrases that one often hears uttered by Jewish organizations both large and small. As far as the Festival goes, it was in almost every respect a smashing success. We had nearly 1000 Jewish students and young adults enjoy a weekend full of fun, food, music and over 120 individual … Continue Reading

Avi Chai: The First Recipients

As we wrote last week, The AVI CHAI Foundation has announced that it is allocating up to $1.15 million over the course of the next three years to four individuals and one team of two whom it has selected as the first recipients of The AVI CHAI Fellowship. Chosen on the basis of their promising creative and entrepreneurial Jewish leadership in the North American Jewish community, the finalists were announced yesterday afternoon in New York; and I am delighted to know and be very aware of the work of three. I am certain this can be said about all the winners, but for those I am personally familiar, they are great and extremely worthwhile endeavors that can only benefit with this recognition. Kol Ha-Kavod to all! First, the team of two? If you've followed many of our posts these past few months … Continue Reading

lsrael’s 60th Anniversary Commemorated by the JBlogosphere: 60Bloggers.com is Live!

Well, after many emails and endless phone calls and the crunching of many, many pixels, 60Bloggers.com is up. What’s that site all about? Well, May 8th is the 60th anniversary of the founding of the modern State of Israel. You’ll notice lots of events happening in Israel and in communities around the world meant to commemorate this historic occasion. 60Bloggers.com is meant to do the same, but on the blogosphere. Consequently, we’ve put together a nice broad group of bloggers, some well-established, some relatively new, representing (I hope) ideological, religious and geographic diversity. Over the course of the next 60 days each will write one blog post on 60Bloggers.com where they will write something related to how they feel about Israel at this momentous juncture in time. We don’t plan … Continue Reading

If cost has been one of the barriers to using Flickr in your nonprofit's outreach efforts, this may tip the balance. The photo-sharing service announced today that it has teamed up with TechSoup, in a new program called Flickr for Good, to give away 10,000 one-year Flickr Pro accounts to nonprofits and public libraries. According to Flickr... "A photo gives us the ability to see what goes on in the world, but can also move us to care, or motivate us to help. Many individuals and organizations use Flickr to share their mission to make the world better, and this is just a sample of what's going on on Flickr. We've partnered with TechSoup, a US-based non-profit technology training service, to donate 10,000 1-year Flickr pro accounts for good causes.
