Bob:

A modest one million users is pretty impossible to attain when there are only 6 million Jews in America. Having once run keyword Jewish on AOL and jewish.com, I can tell you from experience that you are talking about reaching a niche of a niche of a niche. Nobody is going to succeed financially serving a Jewish community that is losing members to death, intermarriage and secularism. JTA could never make enough money selling its daily newsletter before the web was invented. They know better than to try charging for their website, as does the Jerusalem Post.

I think you're BOTH right. It can be done, but not in the way the WSJ would do it.

I wish what you were saying about Jewish media were true, Bob. However, the difference is the immediate value of the content to the user. Unquestionably, Jewish professionals would pay for Jewish news. But who else *needs* that content? The same is true for mainstream media. The Wall STreet Journal has paid subscribers because folks who watch the market *need* it. But who actually needs to know what is going on in Afghanistan, etc? That's why the NYT had to stop requiring paid subscription.
