"Five thank you notes out of thousands of files." Don't know how many thousands, but obviously the percentage of thank yous is way less than 1%.

I'm glad he did the research, it shows one area where there is a huge gap between the non-profit sector's perception of itself - "We always send thank yous, it must be the other non-profits that don't" and the reality.

One category of volunteers that are almost never thanked by non-profits are the volunteers who engage in workplace giving campaigns. The non-profit sector still hasn't figured out that there are ways to say thank you both to anonymous donors and to workplace giving volunteers, including those in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) that each year raise millions of dollars for thousands of local, national and international charities.

A very timely post, thank you. Our society has lost its graciousness in any number of ways over the years. A group we work with did a small thing recently, that made a big impression. They sent a thank you note to a corporation that declined their grant application.

You mentioned the file that foundations keep on organizations. This small, thoughtful and polite response to not receiving a gift shocked the staff of the corporation in a positive way. Next time this group applies for a grant from this corporation you can be sure they will remember this small kindness, that many who received grants failed to extend.
