As someone who was only just recently a student, I can totally sympathize with those looking for a way to participate in High Holiday services without paying a fee. Especially in these times, it's hard justifying paying money to pray. But, there is one thing that surprised me when I read your post-the availability of televised services. I've never heard of that before, and now that I have, I feel a bit disappointed. As you mentioned, the High Holidays represent one of the few times of year that Jews flock to their synagogues. Sanctuaries that are typically only half full often exceed their seating capacities during these few weeks every year. This reality has always made me feel a bit sad, that so many people only rarely attend services. So, finding out that there is now a way for people avoid going even this one time a year made me even sadder. Do Jews really need Kol Nidre services brought right to their own television? I can understand how this service would be helpful to those who are ill or are physically unable to make it to synagogue, but what about everyone else? Shouldn't people try?
