Generational Shift Seen in Giving to Jewish Causes
According to an article this past week in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, " a generation of young Jewish donors is increasingly opting not to give to the causes supported by their parents and grandparents but are instead creating charities and foundations that are directly relevant to their lives."
"A recent report by United Jewish Communities, a network of 155 Jewish federations throughout North America that distributes money to charities, found that federation giving among Jewish people under 50 years of age had sharply decreased."

The New and Hip Jewish London
With 80% of the world Jewish population living in either Israel or the U.S., we sometimes forget our community not only exists, but thrives, in places other than Jerusalem, L.A. and N.Y.C. One distant outpost is London. Here, just a few short weeks before 2008 begins, I encountered both new and exciting initiatives (by and for a new generation of U.K. Jewry) taking root. Here is just one.
On a quiet tree lined street in Willesden Green, almost at the end of the Jubilee Line, sits an unassuming brick home. From the outside, it blends with all the others on the street. Yet inside, on the 2nd night of Chanukah, I was welcomed to a space overflowing with energy, friendship, many ...

Minding the Generational Gap
This past summer, Jerusalem played host to a variety of international conferences with the common topic, the Jewish People and the Future. These gatherings addressed sometimes overlapping issues but were markedly different in both the age groups targeted and the tone set for the Jewish future. In reflecting on two of the larger and more public events, it is clear older, more established institutions in the Jewish world are unfortunately still often closed to emerging leaders; this in spite of the constant bemoaning the dearth of future leadership. At the same time there are hundreds of young, passionate and talented Jewish activists, eager to take on serious leadership roles. They are not waiting for an invitation, but are already taking ...
Au Revoir Nashville
The Jewish Week got it. So did Gary Rosenblatt and Haviv Rettig.
As Gary wrote, "Whether out of pragmatism, devotion or desperation — or a combination of all three — the leadership of UJC, the Jewish federation movement of North America, chose to feature the next generation at this GA, front and center." Judging from the multitude of comments heard over several days, this was the right decision. Because despite the anxiety of the baby boomer generation, this new generation wants and deserves an equal seat at the table.
So, as we move away from the GA, some random and final comments picked up in various sessions and hallways in Nashville:
"...great young talent here at the GA..." (Joe ...
Living Generously, Giving Differently
The NextGen
A name coined by the UJC. Yet, as was mentioned to rounding applause at one of the sessions, perhaps a poor choice. For using the word 'next' we are not concentrating on who they are but rather on who they will become. If this GA showed us anything at all, it is they already are.
It did not matter where you turned during these few days. From the Academy Award winning film, West Bank Story to Ethos Water; from talented and accomplished Israelis like Miri Ben Ari to Pnina Gaday, this demographic is already leaving their mark. BTW, while Miri turned in a stellar performance Monday night at the GrandOleOpry, virtually nothing was said about ...
One People, One Destiny
The week to come
From the outskirts of Moscow to the shoreline on Lake Kinneret and now the Grand Ole Opry; by the hundreds and then thousands. Another packed Fall on our global Jewish calendar.
Limmud (Russia) and Kol Dor have spectacularly concluded their events and the JAFI Board of Governors meeting even brought a bit of the unexpected. Come Motzei Shabbat, the largest annual worldwide gathering of Jewish leadership, the GA, previews in Music City, USA.
We inaugurate ejewishphilanthropy.com from Nashville and (Internet access willing) will bring you highlights of the day's events along with links from many sessions. We plan to focus on the young Jewish leaders who will be attending but will ...
