American Donors Give $116.7m on #GivingTuesday

2015-GivingTuesdayIn its fourth year, #GivingTuesday witnessed record-breaking participation, with more than $116.7 million raised online by 24 major donation­-processing platforms, according to initial estimates released by 92nd Street Y (92Y), based on data collection funded by the Case Foundation.

Charities received more than 1.08 million online contributions during the 24-hour period that began at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and continued until 11:59 p.m. According to the data, the mean gift amount donated by individuals was $107.47 and these gifts were made by a total of 698,961 donors. Those estimates are based on contributions tracked by 24 donation-processing platforms for nonprofits.

#GivingTuesday is largely driven by social media and online giving campaigns: over the course of the day, more than 1.3 million social media mentions were related to #GivingTuesday on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, and 917,313 users were reached on Facebook, which tripled from 2014. The leading issues shared on social channels included education, environment, animals, healthcare and international affairs.

The data represents online donations made to U.S.-based nonprofits only.
