Application Time, part 2

The Center for Leadership Initiatives (CLI) is looking for eight extraordinarily talented young professionals with diverse Jewish backgrounds and interests to join their prestigious Fellowship program. 2008 marks the inception of Insight: The Schusterman Fellowship for Jewish Community. The Fellowship enables Jews in their 20s who are college graduates to sample careers in the community, while enabling organizations to more effectively utilize young people’s skills and energy. The program offers a unique opportunity to learn by working hand-in-hand with Jewish non-profit organizations. With the option of being based in either New York City or Washington, D.C., Insight: the Schusterman Fellowship for Jewish Community is a highly competitive, two-year post-undergraduate Fellowship and Leadership … Continue Reading

Innovation: a.k.a. “Application Time”

It's that time of the year again. Grad school applications, fellowship applications. All those endless forms we so love to fill out. Here are just three of the many that might have been off your radar scope. Generational Shift Seen in Giving to Jewish Causes

According to an article this past week in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, " a generation of young Jewish donors is increasingly opting not to give to the causes supported by their parents and grandparents but are instead creating charities and foundations that are directly relevant to their lives." "A recent report by United Jewish Communities, a network of 155 Jewish federations throughout North America that distributes money to charities, found that federation giving among Jewish people under 50 years of age had sharply decreased." (see the complete Boston Globe article The Chronicle based their report on) … Continue Reading

The New and Hip Jewish London

With 80% of the world Jewish population living in either Israel or the U.S., we sometimes forget our community not only exists, but thrives, in places other than Jerusalem, L.A. and N.Y.C. One distant outpost is London. Here, just a few short weeks before 2008 begins, I encountered both new and exciting initiatives (by and for a new generation of U.K. Jewry) taking root. Here is just one. On a quiet tree lined street in Willesden Green, almost at the end of the Jubilee Line, sits an unassuming brick home. From the outside, it blends with all the others on the street. Yet inside, on the 2nd night of Chanukah, I was welcomed to a space overflowing with energy, friendship, many Chanukiot and lots and lots of 20something smiling Jewish souls. Welcome to Moishe House, London style. With principle … Continue Reading

Oh, Those Americans…

"They drive on the wrong side of the road; they need regime change, but... They are doing some great stuff online." (source, workshop hand-out) This being December, everyone has their lists. Best dressed, worst movies, any and every theme you can possibly imagine. Well, we will not be left out. I just returned from a workshop in London dealing with Current Trends in Online Fundraising. We were a small, eclectic and focused group representing Israel, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S. Organizations as diverse as Mama Cash, a Netherlands based organization focusing on innovative women's projects and 2007 EU winner for an online fundraising campaign, to UNICEF participated. I will have much to offer in thoughts, suggestions and resources over the next few weeks. Stay tuned; … Continue Reading

Up Up and Away; the Value of Social Networks

ejewishphilanthropy.com is up and running; with a low key preview launch just a few days ago we are off to a good beginning enjoying readers from not only Israel and the U.S., but also Canada, France, Namibia and the U.K. What did we do? a few hundred emails went out along with a couple of facebook posts. Some of the results: several thousand page views with the average visitor spending close to 4 minutes on the site. Over 30 visitors took the time to send us an individual email; and most gratifying, established Jewish organizations on 3 continents have offered support and are interested in partnering in various ways. Thank you all and please let your friends and colleagues know about us. I recently sat with the CEO of a major on-line marketing agency focused largely to our Jewish … Continue Reading

Edu-tech: Are You a Technophile or Technophobe? (revisited)

with thanks to Esther Kustanowitz and ROI120.com As you gather with family and friends to celebrate Chanukah, we encourage you to pass along this small test of technoliteracy. Print it out and save; post on your message boards, both in the virtual world and the old fashioned one (the kind requiring thumb tacks). And, if your are an organization manager, give this test to each and every staff member and consultant responsible for your marketing and PR efforts. For this group, anything less than a perfect score requires some serious retooling. What is a blog? Is there a difference between a website and a blog? Do you know how to find Jewish blogs? What does web 2.0 mean? What is Wikipedia? What is YouTube? What is Facebook? Is it the same as MySpace and Friendster, or are there … Continue Reading
